Choosing Carpet
See it in the showroom, then in your own rooms.
Our carpet showroom is on the first floor of our Lenexa building, open by appointment. The visit gets set up when you talk the job over with Jason. Take a few samples home to see them in your own light, next to your own furniture. When we come by to pick them up, we measure for the written number.
The tag on the back lists face weight and twist count. It does not say how the carpet will wear on your stairs or in your hall. We learn that every time we pull up an old carpet to lay a new one, so in our showroom you get advice from the install side.
Where Carpet Meets Everything Else
Every carpet job has at least one transition.
A transition is where carpet meets another floor or another carpet, such as the hardwood hall, the tile at the kitchen door, the doorway between two bedrooms or the first stair. Two floors have to end on one line, and that line is the part of the job you see every time you walk through.

Stairs
The hardest carpet job in any home.
A staircase is a transition at every step.
A flight of stairs is a dozen or more small installs, each cut and fitted by hand. The pad that holds up on a stair is not the one that feels best in a bedroom.
Full carpet or a runner
Full carpet covers the whole stair, treads and risers, and wraps any open side. A runner covers the middle of a finished wood stair and leaves the wood showing at both edges, like the one in the photo.
Wrapped tight at every step
We wrap each step Hollywood style, tight around the nose and tucked underneath, as on every carpeted stair in Our Work. If you want waterfall, where the carpet drops straight down from the nose, we do that too.
When the old carpet comes up
Nobody can see under a carpet until it is up. If something turns up, a soft spot in the subfloor or a loose stair tread, the fix gets settled with you on the job. The crew on your floor is ours, so nothing is passed back to a store and a different installer.

Do you charge for a consultation or in-home estimate?
No. The first conversation is a phone call, and a realistic range is available by phone. An in-home visit follows when the project is ready for one. Neither the call nor the visit costs you anything.
How do you handle pricing?
Before any work begins, the whole job goes in writing: carpet, pad, tear-out, installation, and any prep the job calls for. The price you agree to is the price you pay for the work described. The one thing no estimate can price is what is under the old carpet, because nobody can see it until the old carpet is up.
How do your prices compare with a big box store?
We are not the cheapest square foot of carpet in the Kansas City metro, and we don't try to be. The number you get is for the finished floor: carpet, pad, tear-out and installation, with the stairs and every edge settled before work starts. There is no second company between you and the work, and no sales floor staffed for walk-ins. When you compare prices, compare the number for the finished floor, not the price on the sample.
Should I use carpet or hardwood in my bedroom?
Carpet is warmer and quieter underfoot and usually costs less to put in. Hardwood is easier to keep clean and will outlast any carpet. We put in both, so we can lay out the tradeoffs for your house rather than steer you toward one.
Why does stair carpeting cost more than room carpeting?
A stair is a dozen small installations instead of one. The carpet is cut to each step, fitted around the nosing by hand, and fastened in a space where nothing is quite square. The old carpet comes off the same way, one step at a time, and squeaks and loose treads can be fixed while the treads are bare. A room of the same square footage is a fraction of the labor.
What is the difference between Hollywood and waterfall stair carpet?
Both cover the tread and the riser. In a Hollywood install the carpet is wrapped around the nose of the step and fastened beneath it, so it hugs the profile of the stair. In a waterfall install it rolls over the nose and falls straight down to the tread below, with a gap under the lip. We install both.
How is a stair runner different from carpeted stairs?
Carpeted stairs are covered completely, every tread and riser, and an open side gets wrapped too, so no wood shows. A runner covers only the center of a wood stair that is already finished, leaving the wood visible at both edges. A runner keeps the look of the wood. Full carpet hides it, and suits a stair that was never finished.
How long does carpet last?
Well chosen and well installed, carpet lasts 10 to 15 years in rooms with ordinary traffic. Halls and stairs show wear sooner. Density and the pad under it decide which end of that range you land on.
How do I know when it is time to replace carpet?
The clearest signs are matting that does not recover after cleaning, an odor that deep cleaning does not remove, and fraying at seams or edges. A less visible sign is the pad giving out underneath. If the carpet feels different underfoot in certain spots, the pad may have failed even though the surface looks fine.
What is a carpet transition, and do I need one?
A transition is the place where carpet stops and another floor starts, or where two carpets meet, such as a doorway to hardwood, the edge of kitchen tile, the hearth, a bedroom doorway or the top of a stair. Every job has one somewhere. How it is finished is a choice among a metal strip, a wood strip finished to match the trim, a hidden edge with the strip tucked out of sight, and carpet set flush with the wood, which on a stair is called a recessed or inlaid install.
What if there is a problem under the old carpet?
Nobody can know for certain what is under a floor until the old one comes out. Jason can make an educated guess once he has seen the room, from the age of the house and how the floor feels underfoot, and he will tell you what he expects. The chance of a surprise is still there on every job. The question is who you want to deal with when it happens. If the carpet came from one place and the crew from another, the surprise is between them. With All Dimensions, the company that sold you the carpet is the company standing on the subfloor, and the fix is handled by the same crew on the same job.
